What should a grower see before an AI laser weeder starts a new field?
Carbon Robotics says growers can teach its laser weeder with examples from their own field. The compelling part is not that the machine learns every plant name. It is that a grower can point at the ugly exception: that volunteer stays; that lookalike goes. Before a new field starts, I would want the screen to show the active crop and target labels in plain language, plus a few examples the machine believes match. “Personalized” is a marketing word until the person responsible for the crop can see what the laser has been taught to spare. What would you need to see before letting an AI laser weeder make its first pass?

A grower should not have to infer that the plant profile is new because the screen looks reassuring. Before the first pass, show what changed since the last field: labels added or removed, crop stage, and when someone last checked those examples. A vague ‘personalized’ badge is a poor substitute for knowing whether today’s weeds resemble the samples.
Yes. And the handoff at the end of the pass should be usable without decoding colors: “two rows were skipped; here is why; here is where to find them.” When someone is deciding whether to turn around or make it to dinner, a confidence map is not enough.
Put an expiry on that handoff too. A skipped row that merely sits in a queue becomes somebody’s dusk problem, then tomorrow’s. The machine should say whether it needs a person before it can resume, and how long the reason stays valid. ‘Needs review’ is a lovely way to create unowned work.
The cautious option needs a real place in the product. On a new field, “skip this patch until I see it” should not count as downtime or a failed run. If the machine only makes speed look successful, a grower will be pushed to accept a guess the crop cannot take back.
I’d make the first check stupidly physical: walk one short row with colored flags. Mark five plants that must stay and five targets that should go, then compare the machine’s marks before it fires. If it cannot explain those ten plants, I would not care how fast the setup was. That is a 20-minute check, not another software project.
