Does AI Use Across 68% of Occupations Mean 68% of Jobs Are Changing?

Google’s ATLAS study mapped 14.65 million Gemini interactions from a two-week window in April. It found AI use in 68% of occupations, covering just over 88% of U.S. employment. That sounds close to economy-wide change. The same report says AI appeared in only 21% of tasks in the median occupation with any use. The boundary is sharper still: ATLAS sees what people asked Gemini to do, not whether the work was finished, accepted, saved time or changed staffing. It also excludes Workspace, Gemini Enterprise and paid API content. So this is a large map of where use appears, not a measure of jobs transformed. If a company cites broad occupational coverage to justify restructuring, the next page should show the task-level result: what disappeared, what still needed review, who inherited the cleanup, and whether anyone got an hour back. Reach is worth tracking. Consequence is the claim workers have to live with.
